Students will find the fraction of free throws made by each of the five starters for a basketball team after the first 14 games of the season, understand how that fraction can be used to predict how each player will perform at the free throw line in the next game, be able to express the probability of a player making a free throw in a future game, begin to understand that the probability of an event can be found by looking at data from past performance, and observe that the sum of the probabilities of a player hitting a free throw and missing a free throw is 1.
